COSTA MESA, Calif. - Five members of the Pepperdine men's cross country team competed Saturday at the Vanguard Invitational, which they treated as a warm-up to next weekend's meet at Santa Clara. Senior Seth Allison (Canyon, Texas/Canyon HS) led the Waves to finish line of the 8K race with a 22nd-place time of 26:50.
"Today's race was a nice workout for us as we continue to prepare for the big event at Santa Clara," head coach Robert Radnoti said. "This was largely a flat course but had some tough hills as well, which is what we'll certainly see during the championship season."
Finishing behind Allison were junior Jordan Wozniak (27:31), sophomore Jonathan Rahaeuser (28:03), Russell Mott (28:40) and Jesse Aston (29:28).
Pepperdine's average finish was 28:06. Host Vanguard University - an NAIA school ranked 21st in the country - won its home race with 61 points and recorded an average finish of 26:14.
Abednego Magut of Azusa Pacific won the race that featured 123 competitors in 24:59.
The 2010 Bronco Invitational takes place next Saturday, Oct. 16 at Baylands Park in Sunnyvale, Calif. The women's 5k invitational begins at 9:45 a.m., and the men's 8k kicks off at 10:30 a.m.
