MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine women's volleyball team used on-target hitting and diligent defense to blank Gonzaga 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-12) on Dig Pink night inside Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves, who have now tallied nine shutouts, improve to 13-5 and a perfect 4-0 in the West Coast Conference. The Bulldogs fall to 2-19, and 0-5 in the league.
Each October, volleyball teams nationwide take part in Breast Cancer Awareness month by hosting a "Dig Pink" match to show their support and promote fundraising for research. Tonight, the Pepperdine athletic department, along with the University's chapter of Colleges Against Cancer, sold baked goods and Pepperdine memorabilia to raise a record amount of $881. Donations are still being accepted at the Pepperdine Dig Pink Homepage.
In front of a boisterous, pink-clad crowd the home team hit an impressive .341 (55-13-123) attack percentage. The team's 55 kills set a new season-best for a three-set match. Additionally, their 62 digs also reset the three-set match season-high total.
Lilla Frederick (Huntington Beach, Calif./Cornelia Connelly HS) was one of five attackers to hit over a .400 clip. Frederick posted 17 put aways on 35 tries to front the offensive assault for Pepperdine. Emily Cook (Murrieta, Calif./Murrieta Valley HS) had a solid night, with 12 kills off of a .455 attack percentage.
Other Waves to hit over .400 included Kellie Woolever (.500, 4-1-6), Brittney Clark (.545, 6-0-11), and Kelley Larsen (.571, 4-0-7)
The Bulldogs came out hot in the first frame, jumping to an 8-2 advantage to prompt head coach Nina Matthies to break up the momentum with a timeout. Victoria Adelhelm (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif./Santa Fe Christian) came of the break with a kill off the assist of Woolever (Long Beach, Calif./Woodrow Wilson HS) to jump start a 6-1 rally to trail by just one. Both sides traded the next few points, but the Waves began to find their offensive rhythm and finally put the set away 25-19. Frederick and Cook led the way with five kills apiece.
The Wave offense dictated the second stanza, out-killing the Bulldogs 20-9. Pepperdine limited Gonzaga to the low kill total by relaying on impenetrable defense in the backcourt. Stevi Robinson (Hermosa Beach, Calif./Mira Costa HS) tallied four digs in the frame, while Woolever and Frederick each contributed three. Frederick nailed down four-straight kills to give Pepperdine a 15-8 advantage and enable the Wave to cruise to a 25-16 victory. She would end the set with nine.
Pepperdine continued to relentlessly control the tempo of the match with balanced, two-way volleyball. The Waves posted 16 kills and 23 digs en route to a 25-12 win. All six attackers to see the court time registered at least put away. Clark (San Jose, Calif./Presentation HS), Frederick and Adelhelm each had two rejections apiece in the frame.
The Waves wrap up this week's home swing against Portland on Sat., Oct. 16. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
