MALIBU, Calif. - Sophomore guard Keion Bell reached the 20-point mark for the ninth time this season, but the Pepperdine men's basketball team lost 86-63 to Miami (Fla.) in Firestone Fieldhouse on Sunday afternoon.
The Waves (4-12) were playing their final non-conference game against a Hurricane squad (14-1) with one of the best winning percentages in the country.
Bell (Los Angeles, Calif./Pasadena HS) made half of his 22 points at the foul line. He also had five rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior forward Mychel Thompson (Portland, Ore./Stoneridge Prep) added 15 points and four steals and sophomore forward Dane Suttle Jr. (Los Angeles, Calif./Summit College Prep) posted 13 points.
The Hurricanes, who made 13 three-pointers and had a 52.6%-35.1% shooting edge, got 21 points from James Dews and 15 points from Adrian Thomas.
Miami never trailed in the game, and Thomas began and ended a 10-0 run with three-pointers to give the Hurricanes a 21-10 lead with 12 minutes left. The teams roughly traded points the rest of the first half, with the Waves getting it down to eight points a couple of times and the Hurricanes taking their largest lead of 14 points at 39-25 after Dews drained back-to-back three-pointers with less than five minutes left.
Thompson scored seven of his 10 first-half points down the stretch, and sophomore center Corbin Moore (Cypress, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) hit a jumper with eight seconds left to cut Miami's lead to 45-36 at halftime.
Suttle (11), Bell (11) and Thompson scored 32 of Pepperdine's 36 first-half points.
Junior forward Jonathan Dupre' (Houston, Texas/Collin County CC) opened the second half by making a jumper, closing the gap to seven points, but the Waves got no closer than that. Miami held a 10-point lead at 56-46 after Thompson made two free throws with 16:21 left, but the Hurricanes then went on a 12-0 run to make it 68-46. Miami's largest second-half lead was 26 points.
Pepperdine, which has no seniors and has a roster where 12 of the 16 players are underclassmen, has been led in scoring by its sophomore class in 16 of 16 games this season.
Pepperdine opens West Coast Conference play on Saturday (Jan. 9) with a men's/women's doubleheader against local rival Loyola Marymount. Points in the newly created PCH Cup, a season-long competition between the two schools, will be up for grabs.
