PORTLAND, Ore. - The Pepperdine men's basketball team's trip to the Northwest ended with an 80-64 loss at Portland on Saturday night in West Coast Conference play.

The Waves fell to 7-14 overall and 3-2 in the WCC, while the Pilots improved to 12-7, 3-2.

Sophomore guard Keion Bell (Los Angeles, Calif./Pasadena HS) had an impressive offensive showing during the Waves' two-game trip. After scoring a team-high 21 points tonight, he averaged 29.0 over the two games. He posted a career-high 37 in Pepperdine's 91-84 loss at Gonzaga on Thursday. Tonight was his 11th time this season with 20 or more points.

Two of the Waves' young big men had solid games, as sophomore forward Taylor Darby (San Marcos, Calif./Mission Hills HS) scored 13 points and freshman forward Tanner Kerry (Sydney, Australia) added a season-high 11 points along with a team-best seven rebounds.

Portland got 24 points and nine assists from T.J. Campbell and 22 points and six three-pointers from Jared Stohl.

Pepperdine had an exceptional start to the game offensively. The Waves made their first seven shots of the game and after Kerry sank two free throws, they had a five-point lead at 21-16 after just six minutes. Pepperdine took its largest lead at six points at 24-18 when Bell made a three-point play with 11:30 to go. Pepperdine's last lead of the game came at 31-30 with 5:09 to go before halftime when Bell sank a three-pointer. But the Pilots went into halftime on a 19-8 run to take a 49-38 advantage at the break.

After shooting 57.1% from the field in the first half, the Waves dropped off to 27.6% in the second. Bell opened the second half with a three-pointer to cut the lead to eight, and later on a three-pointer by junior forward Jonathan Dupre' (Houston, Texas/Collin County CC) made it a nine-point game at 53-44 with 16:24 to go. But Portland maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way and led by as many as 23 points in the second half.

Pepperdine, which has no seniors and has a roster where 12 of the 16 players are underclassmen, has been led in scoring by its sophomore class in 21 of 21 games this season.

The Waves return home to close out the first half of conference play with games against Saint Mary's (Thursday, Jan. 28, 7 p.m.) and San Diego (Saturday, Jan. 30, 7 p.m.).
