#5 Waves Fall to #4 UCLA, 8-5

LOS ANGLELES, Calif. - The No. 5 Pepperdine men's water polo team fell to No. 4 UCLA  8-5, in the first round of the MPSF Tournament on Friday at the McDonald's Swim Center.

Clayton Snyder (Seal Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos, Calif.) was the high scorer for Pepperdine with three goals, while teammate Brett Auer (Newport Beach, Calif./Newport HS) scored two goals. Goalkeeper Tommy O'Connell (Trabuco Canyon, Calif./El Toro HS) was credited with 10 saves.

The first period saw strong defense by both teams as neither offense was able to score. The Bruins took command the second period scoring four goals to the Waves one. Pepperdine was down 4-1 at the half.

The Waves came back in the third period scoring three goals, yet UCLA responded with three of their own. The Bruins scored the first goal of the period followed by a goal by Auer with 6:36 left on the clock. Snyder followed with back-to-back goals at 5:54 and 5:01. The Waves trailed by one at 5-4.  UCLA's Ben Hohl answered with two 6-on-5 goals to end the period up at 7-4.

The Bruins Scott Davidson scored the final goal for UCLA on another man-up opportunity with 3:50 left in the game. Auer responded at 2:20 with a goal for the Waves, but it wasn't enough as the Bruins were up 8-5, at the buzzer.

Next up, the Waves meet Pacific at 9:30 a.m., on Saturday at the McDonald's Swim Center, in the second round of MPSF Tournament.
