IRVINE, Calif. - Christian Cardey's goal in the fifth overtime period propelled the No. 5 Pepperdine men's water polo team to a 15-14 victory over No. 10 UC Irvine on Sunday at the Anteater Pool.
The Waves (11-10, 3-4) jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first period. The Anteaters (15-10, 3-4) cut the lead by one at the end of the period with a score of 4-3.
Clayton Snyder (Seal Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) scored a goal in the second period to give the Waves a two goal lead at 5-3. UCI answered back with back-to-back goals to tie the game at 5-5 with 4:40 left in the period. Griffin Lerman and Greg Enloe added two more goals for the Anteaters with 2:18 on the clock. The Anteaters were up 7-5. Each team added a goal before the buzzer sounded and the UCI led at 8-6 at the half.
Pepperdine fought back in the third period with and were within one goal of the Anteaters when the period ended at 10-9.
JP MacDonell's (Redwood, Calif./Bellarmine Prep.) penalty shot with 6:48 remaining in the game tied the score once again at 10-10.
With 52 seconds left in the game Danny White (Oxnard, Calif./Rio Mesa HS) scored a goal to give the Waves a 13-12 lead. With one second on the clock Kyle Baxter made a shot in the cage to force the game into overtime at 13-13.
The Anteaters scored in the first overtime to take a 14-13 lead, but Pepperdine scored in the second overtime to tie the game. Neither team scored in the third and fourth overtimes. Cardey's goal in the fifth overtime gave the Waves the win at 15-14.
Next up, the Waves host UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m., on Saturday November 21, at the Raleigh-Runnels Memorial Pool.
