MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine baseball team today announced that it will be holding a pair of golf tournament fundraisers over the next few months.
The Patrick Rooney Memorial Golf Tournament will take place at the Moorpark Country Club on Monday, Nov. 16, and the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks will play host to the Big League Golf Experience on Monday, Dec. 14.
Proceeds from both events will directly benefit the Waves' Baseball program. Previously raised dollars have supported graduating seniors, increased travel budgets, upgraded facilities and maintained equipment.
A number of improvements have taken place at Pepperdine's Eddy D. Field Stadium in recent years thanks to these donations. A state-of-the-art video scoreboard was installed prior to the 2007 season; a new protective backstop screen was raised in 2008; and in 2009, several video cameras were mounted around the field to help coaches better scout their own players.
Pepperdine raised a padded wall this past month around the outfield, but allowed a small window in left-center field, which will still allow fans to catch a glimpse of the Pacific Ocean.
The Patrick Rooney Memorial Golf Tournament is named in honor of the former Waves' third baseman, who died alongside his father, Bill, in a plane crash earlier this year. Rooney played at Pepperdine from 2002 to 2005 and helped lead the Waves to a pair of West Coast Conference titles and three NCAA Regional berths. His younger brother, Colin Rooney, is the team's current starting third baseman.
Check-in time for the Rooney Memorial is 9 a.m. and participants will be grouped together for a foursome scramble. Awards will be presented to the team with the lowest score as well as to individuals who hit the ball closest to the pin and club the longest drive.
A post-tournament buffet will be served in conjunction with a silent auction. This year's auction items include golf amenities, baseball merchandise, sportswear apparel, dinners for two, and a weekend getaway to Malibu.
The Big League Golf Experience check-in time is 8 a.m. and will include breakfast, lunch and dinner in addition to a silent auction and awards reception. Participants also will receive their own group caddy, a bucket of driving range balls and a tee gift package.
A number of professional athletes have attended this event in previous years including current and former major leaguers Vince Coleman, Bobby Grich, Evan Longoria, Jared Weaver, and Steve Yeager, and NFL Hall of Fame running backs Marcus Allen and Eric Dickerson.
