No. 23 Waves Play No. 22 Alabama on Sunday

 Malibu, Calif. Â The No. 23 Pepperdine men’s tennis team advanced to the championship match of the ITA National Team Indoor qualifying tournament, Saturday afternoon, after defeating No. 45 Denver, 6-1.

Pepperdine won the doubles-point with Hugh Clarke (Brisbane, Australia/Brisbane Boys College) and Alex Llompart (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico/San Juan School) finishing first on court 3 with a win over Johann Gunnerson and Yannick Weihs (Denver), 8-2. Finishing second to secure the doubles-point, were Omar Altman (Cairo, Egypt) and Bassam Beidas (Cairo, Egypt) over Martin Zimmerman and David Simson, 8-2.  The Waves won five of the six singles matches to secure the team win.

No. 22 Alabama had a 4-1 win over No. 24 Miami in the second match of the day. Alabama secured the doubles point with wins on court 2 and court 3. In singles, Alabama's Dan Buikema defeated Miami's Keith Crowley on court 5, 6-1, 6-2, to finish first. Court 2 finished second with Mathieu Thiebaudeau (Alabama) defeating David Simon (Miami), 6-3, 6-2. J.C. Whitner (Miami) had to default to  Michael Jung (Alabama) after rolling an ankle. The rest of the singles matches were suspended after Alabama clinched the match.

Pepperdine plays Alabama in the championship match Sunday, Feb. 1, at 1 p.m. Miami meets Denver in the consolation match at 10 a.m., at the Ralphs Straus Tennis Center.
