Associate Athletic Director Roxanne Levenson began by welcoming the student-athletes, faculty members and administrators in attendance. She mentioned that 30 percent of all student-athletes made the scholar-athlete list, and that the teams with the highest percentage of scholar-athletes were women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s volleyball and men’s cross country.
Following an invocation by women’s basketball student-athlete Miranda Ayim, lunch was served.
Dr. Marv Dunphy, long-time men’s volleyball coach and a popular instructor in the physical education department, spoke next. He told a story about taking an anatomy class at
Dr. Robin Perrin, a professor in the sociology department and a member of the Faculty Athletic Committee, took a walk down memory lane as a life-long fan of Pepperdine athletics. He mentioned names from the past and talked about listening to games when he was young to traveling to championship events in recent years. He said that while the winning is memorable, he’s proudest of the athletic department when academic honors are announced and he sees Pepperdine’s representatives on the list.
Women’s volleyball student-athlete Julie Rubenstein spoke about growing up in a Pepperdine family and how it was natural for her to come here. She said she was thankful that Pepperdine has allowed her to grow as a student, a player, a leader, a Christian and a friend, and that the school has helped her become who she is today. Rubenstein is Pepperdine’s representative on the national Student Athletic Advisory Committee and she talked about her role on that group, and how she and others have a voice and have influenced NCAA decisions and legislation.
Director of Athletics John Watson wrapped up the luncheon by thanking the administrators, coaches and faculty members for their guidance, mentoring and support of student-athletes, and he thanked the student-athletes for taking their academics seriously and setting a fine example for their teammates.
