Pepperdine Advances to MPSF Semifinals

MALIBU, Calif. Â Junior J.P. MacDonell led the No. 4 Pepperdine men’s water polo team to a first round victory over No. 5 UC Santa Barbara, 11-7, Saturday at the MPSF Championships.

MacDonell (Redwood City, Calif./Bellarmine Prep.) scored a hat trick for the Waves, while Adam Hewko (Irvine, Calif./ Servite HS) added two goals along with Blake Hubbell (Malibu, Calif./ Royal HS). Milos Golic scored a hat trick for the Gaucho’s.

The Waves came out strong with four goals in the first period to the Gaucho’s two. The Pepperdine momentum continued into the second period with three more goals to UCSB’s one, to end the half up by four with a score of 7-3.

Taking advantage of a 6-on-5 opportunity, Hewko opened up the second half with a goal for the Waves followed by J.P. MacDonell’s third goal of the game. A strong Pepperdine defense shut the Gaucho’s out in the third period. However, UCSB came back with a vengeance in the fourth period to score four goals to the Waves two.

Golic scored all three of his goals on power plays for UCSB while the Waves scored four of their goals on man-up opportunities.

Goalkeeper John Hahn had 12 saves for Pepperdine and Fraser Bunn had 6 saves for UCSB.

Tomorrow, the Waves meet No. 2 Stanford in the semi finals at 3:30 p.m.

USC vs. UC Irvine, 8-6

The University of Southern California water polo team advanced to tomorrow's semi finals after defeating UC Irvine, 8-6, in the first round of the MPSF tournament. UCI got off to a slow start with the Trojans up 3-0 at the end of the first period. The Anteaters had a strong fourth period outscoring the Trojans 5-1. Brandon Johnson (UCI) scored a hat-trick.

Stanford vs. Long Beach 13-7

Stanford water polo team advanced to the semi finals on Saturday after defeating Long Beach State, 13-7. A sluggish first-half for the Beach saw the Cardinal up by six at the half with a score of 7-1. Long Beach came back in the second-half to score six goals, but an aggressive Stanford offense answered back with six goals of its own. Will Hindle-Katel and Drac Wigo scored four goals each for the Cardinal. The Beach's Ashley Blythen scored five goals, four of them in four minutes.

UCLA vs. California 11-8

UCLA men's water polo team advanced to the semi finals after defeating Cal, 11-8, in the first round of the MPSF Tournament.  A close first period saw California only trailing by one goal with a score of 4-3. The Bruins finished the half with a three goal lead at 8-5. Cal put fourth a strong fourth period effort to outscore the Bruins 2-1. Scott Davidson and Ben Hohl each scored a hat trick for UCLA. Goalkeeper Chay Lapin had 13 Saves for the Bruins.
