Smith, a 1977 graduate of Pepperdine, is in his second season with the Phillies and has 25-plus years as a coach at the professional level. He was previously with the Texas Rangers for five seasons (2002-06), in the Milwaukee Brewers organization for two seasons (2000-01), with the Seattle Mariners organization for nine seasons (1991-99) and with the San Diego Padres organization for six seasons (1993-98).
As a player, Smith spent seven seasons (1976-82) as a second baseman and shortstop in the San Diego Padres’ minor league system.
Smith played two seasons with the Waves (1975-76) and earned all-conference honors in 1975. He was drafted by the Padres in the 24th round of the 1976 draft.
