The Waves (12-3,0-1) played their first home game with bleachers full of Pepperdine and LMU fans.
LMU was up by two points at the half and was leading until the last quarter. LMU came out strong in the first quarter with four goals to Pepperdine’s two. The Waves appeared to be struggling until the third quarter when they were tied 6-6 with 3:17 seconds left. LMU mounted an aggressive offense scoring two more goals and ending the quarter 9-7. LMU’s Tibor Forai scored three goals in the third quarter. Pepperdine came back early in the quarter with a goal by junior attacker Grant Miller (
“I was very disappointed with the first half,” said head coach Jack Kocur. “If we want to move forward we’re going to have to put it all together from the first whistle.”
LMU’s goalkeeper John Prunkle had 10 saves and Pepperdine’s goalkeeper junior Jack Curley (
UC Santa Barbara and LMU met for the third match of the day with LMU coming out strong once again. With the help of three goals in the first half by Tim Hummel, LMU was tied 7-7 at the end of the third quarter. However, the Gauchos depth proved to be too much for the Lions as nine players scored goals for UCSB finishing the game with a 10-7 score. UCSB’s Brian Bishop was their only multiple scorer with two goals.
In a match where not many unsuccessful shots were taken, UCSB’s Rick Wright was credited with six saves while LMU’s Andy Stevens has three.
Pepperdine and Golden West played the third and fourth match against each other with the Waves taking both matches 12-8 and 10-9.
