WASHINGTON D.C. – The Pepperdine women’s basketball was defeated by No. 22 George Washington University Sunday afternoon, 82-68, at the Charles E. Smith Athletic Center in Washington D.C.
The Colonials (10-3) were up by 13-points at the half with Pepperdine (5-6) suffering from missed shots and turnovers. George Washington’s Jessica Adair shot 7-10 from the field in the first half, scoring 15 points for the Colonials. The Waves, usually strong on three-pointers, shot 33 % for the half scoring only three points outside the paint.
Pepperdine fought back the second half closing in on George Washington’s lead with 15:51 left in the game to bring the score within four points (50-46) after a lay up by Daphanie Kennedy (Oakland, Calif. / Kearny HS) followed by a free throw. For the second straight game Jessica Ross (Gilroy, Calif. / Notre Dame HS) was the leading scorer for the Waves with a season-high 17 points. Ross shot 7-10 from the field. Miranda Ayim (London, Ontario, Canada) was the second leading scorer with 14 points, shooting 5-11 from the field and 4-5 on free throws.
Shooting 75% on free throws to the Colonials 62% wasn’t enough to counter George Washington’s 53% from the field to Pepperdine’s 42% and 50% on three-pointers to the Waves 36%.
Next up for the Waves is No.6 Rutgers University on Wednesday, Jan. 2, at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in New Brunswick, N.J. at 7:30 p.m. ET. In 2006 Pepperdine upset Rutgers 75-73 in overtime at the Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.
