Waves Fall to UT Arlington, 64-54

MALIBU, Calif. –  The Pepperdine women’s basketball team fell to UT Arlington 64-54 in the first round of the Timeout 4 HIV/AIDS Tournament in Malibu, Calif. at Firestone Fieldhouse.

 

The Waves will face Ole Miss tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. in the consolation game, while the Mavericks will face Wisconsin for the tournament crown at 1 p.m.

 

“It wasn’t the game we expected to play,” Pepperdine Coach Julie Rousseau said. “All the credit goes to UT Arlington, we just didn’t meet the challenge today. Hopefully we’ll turn it around tomorrow and play with more passion and fire.”

 

The Waves shot 31.1% for the game and hit only 60% (12-of-20) of their free throws, while the Mavericks shot 41.1% for the game and hit 93.8% from the free-throw line (15-of-16). The Mavericks finished with a 42-38 rebounding edge and led throughout the entire game. The Waves fell behind early and trailed the entire game, as the Mavericks went on a 7-0 run to start the game and led by as many as 14 points in the first half. The Waves were limited to 25.8% shooting in the half (8-of-31) while the Mavericks shot 37.9% (11-of-29).

 

Miranda Ayim (London, Ont., Canada/Saunders Secondary) recorded her second double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds, Teena Wickett (Oakland, Calif./Castlemont HS) notched 17 points and eight rebounds, while Katie Menton (Yosemite, Calif./Yosemite HS)

 

The Mavericks had only two players score in double figures, as Maryann Abanobi scored a  game-high 29 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the field and Shalyn Martin recorded 12 points.

 

In the first game of the afternoon, Wisconsin defeated Ole Miss 74-57 to set up the championship match with the Mavericks. Jolene Anderson scored a team-high 19 points for the Badgers also chipped in five rebounds and five assists, and the Badgers also received double-figure point totals from Mariah Dunham (14 points), Janese Banks (11 points) and Lin Zastrow (11 points). The Rebels were led by Kayla Melson’s team-high 16 points, and Shawn Goff (14 points) and Shantell Black (10 points) also reached double figures in points.
