MALIBU, Calif. – The Pepperdine women’s basketball team had five players score in double figures, as it posted a 95-77 victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Friday night at Firestone Fieldhouse.

 

The Waves 95 points set a season high, as they improved to 2-1 with the win, while Cal State Bakersfield fell to 2-1.

 

The Waves shot 55.6% from the field for the game while the Roadrunners shot 36%, the Waves finished with a 50-30 rebounding edge, a 23-11 assists advantage and finished 9-20 from behind the arc, as the Roadrunners finished 6-22.

 

“It was a good effort tonight,” Pepperdine Coach Julie Rousseau said. “I thought the our post play was really strong and we had a more balanced attack and we stayed disciplined.”

 

The Waves and Roadrunners battled throughout the first half with the Waves clinging to a narrow 24-22 lead at the 12:00 minute mark. Following a media timeout, the Waves went on a 15-0 run that gave them some breathing room, as Daphanie Kennedy (Oakland, Calif./Kearny HS) and Miranda Ayim (London, Ont., Canada/Saunders Academy) combined to score 13 of the 15 points. Kennedy finished with 18 points in the first half, as she was 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-6 from the three-point line, while Ayim shot a perfect 6-of-6 from the field in the first half and finished with a near double-double, with 14 points and nine rebounds. The second half was a more even affair, as the Waves finished the second half with a narrow 46-44 scoring advantage en route to the 95-77 victory.

 

Kennedy finished with a season-best 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting, while Ayim posted her first double-double of the season with 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 14 rebounds, both season highs. Teiosha George (Palmdale, Calif./Palmdale HS)  finished with 16 points and eight rebounds, Katie Menton (Yosemite, Calif./Yosemite HS) totaled 15 points and four blocks and Jessica Ross (Gilroy, Calif./Notre Dame HS) recorded 10 points and nine assists.

 

Up next, Waves will host the Timeout 4 HIV AIDS Tournament from Nov. 23-24, as they will play UT-Arlington on Friday, Nov. 23 at 3:30 p.m.
