Water Polo Finishes 5-0 At Claremont Convergence

The Waves (17-3, 01) finished their two-day match play 5-0 by defeating Pomona-Pitzer 17-2 in the last game of the Convergence. Senior Nick Corjon (La Verne, The final match was a reunion of sorts as Pomona-Pitzer’s coach Alex Rodriguez, was previously an assistant water polo coach for Pepperdine as well as a former teammate of Waves’ head coach Jack Kocur. Rodriguez was responsible for recruiting most of the upper classmen on Kocur’s roster. “It was exciting to have been able to coach against Alex today. We share a relationship as classmates, teammates and coaches. My friendship with him is based on respect and admiration built on the many years of our acquaintance. I think the players he was responsible for bringing to Pepperdine were eager to show him how they’ve progressed over the years,” said Kocur. A 17-5 win over Occidental started the day. Freshman Uriel Villa (Commerce, “We really didn’t feel warmed-up enough when the match started and we had kind of a sluggish first quarter. We really picked up the intensity in the second quarter and kept the momentum throughout the rest of the game,” said Villa. The Waves came on strong the second quarter scoring eight goals and shutting Occidental out. Freshman Blake Hubbell ( Pepperdine defeated Chapman in the second match of the day 17-2. Matt MacDonell led the team with four goals. The Waves had a big third quarter with six goals scored. After scoring two goals in the first quarter, Chapman was shutout the rest of the game. Villa, coming off an excellent game against Occidental scored three goals for the Waves as did freshman Travis Gough ( Next up for the Waves is the SoCal Tournament hosted by UC Irvine next Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13-14.
