Men's Basketball Holds Saturday Scrimmage

MALIBU, Calif. ÂThe Pepperdine men’s basketball team held an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday morning at Firestone Fieldhouse, followed by a booster and alumni luncheon in Heritage Hall.

A few dozen fans that came out saw an initial 20-minute game that pitted more or less the first team against the second team, and the Orange squad rolled to a 54-34 win. The teams were broken up into a little more balanced squads for the second 20-minute game, and that ended up in a 52-52 tie.

A seven-minute overtime was held to break the tie and the Orange won that period, 14-13, thanks to a short jumper by junior guard Ryan Holmes (Phoenix, Ariz./Millennium HS/Phoenix CC) with 2.2 seconds left.

Over the course of the 47 minutes of action, the leading scorers were freshman guard Tyrone Shelley (San Diego, Calif./Crawford HS) with 34 points, junior guard Mike Hornbuckle (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian HS/Azusa Pacific) with 27 points, freshman guard Mychel Thompson (Ladera Ranch, Calif./Stoneridge Prep) with 23 points, freshman center Daniel Johnson (Perth, Australia) with 22 points and junior guard Tyler Carr (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks HS/Moorpark JC) with 20 points.

Junior guard Rico Tucker (San Diego, Calif./University HS/Minnesota) was held out as a precaution with a minor injury.

Head coach Vance Walberg saw some positives during today’s scrimmages, but he also knows that his very young team still has a lot to learn before the first exhibition game that is just over a week away. The Waves host Westmont on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

“We’re still paying our dues for being so young,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of young kids who are working hard. But when you jump from high school to Division I there are so many different things to learn. We’re behind a bit because of our inexperience. I’ve got no complaint with our effort, though. I’ve told the guys that I’m a big believer that strong beats weak and smart beats strong. We’ve got to get to the smart point.”
