No. 5 Pepperdine Falls to No. 2 California

BERKELEY, Calif. Â The No. 5 Pepperdine men’s water polo team was defeated by No. 2 California Friday night 6-4, in a hard fought match at Spieker Aquatic Center on the Berkeley campus.

“It was a tough battle,” said head coach Jack Kocur. “We left it all in the pool.”

The Waves (21-5) faced an aggressive offense from the start as Cal scored three goals in the first quarter. The Bears were up by three at the half (5-2). Pepperdine played a strong third quarter scoring two goals to Cal’s one (6-4). Outstanding defense kept either team from scoring in the fourth quarter. Sophomore goalkeeper Travis Stachowski (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Foothill HS) had ten saves and Cal’s All-American goalkeeper Mark Sheredy, was credited with nine.

Leading the Waves offense was Junior Adam Hewko (Irvine, Calif. / Servite HS). Sophomores Clayton Snyder (Seal Beach, Calif. / Los Alamitos HS) and J.P. MacDonell (Redwood, Calif. / Bellarmine HS) each scored a goal.

“We feel good. We fought and played hard. We came back third quarter and made it a close game. The level we played at tonight is a good step forward for this team,” said Hewko.’’

The highly anticipated match was rescheduled and relocated to Berkeley after the Malibu Wildfires forced a cancellation last weekend (Oct. 21). The Waves were originally scheduled to meet UC Davis on Friday, but had to change their schedule in order to fit the Cal game in.

Sunday, Oct. 28, Pepperdine travels to Palo Alto to take on No. 4 Stanford.
