Water Polo Finishes Fifth at SoCal

 

IRVINE, Calif. Â The No. 5 Pepperdine men’s water polo team took fifth place at the SoCal Tournament Sunday, after defeating No. 6 Long Beach 8-7. Earlier in the day, the Waves were victorious over No.10 LMU 12-8. The tournament was hosted by UC Irvine.

Holding on to the No. 5 spot, Pepperdine (20-4, 0-1) battled with Long Beach well into the fourth quarter when the Waves were down by one, junior Adam Hewko (Irvine, Calif. / Servite HS) scored a goal to tie the game and freshman Caleb Hamilton (Irvine, Calif. / Northwood HS) scored the winning goal on a penalty shot with :51 left in the game.  Hamilton led the team in scoring with three goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Travis Stachowski (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Foothill HS) was strong on defense with 13 saves.

“We came out strong and bounced back after our loss to UCLA last night,” said Junior J.P. MacDonell “We showed that we’re a better team than how we played against UCLA. I believe we showed that we have the confidence to play with the best teams in the nation and we’re ready for Cal next week.”

The men defeated LMU after a slow start. With 5:41 remaining in the second quarter, the Waves were tied 4-4. Pepperdine came back and scored the next four goals and dominated the rest of the match. Junior Grant Miller (La Verne, Calif. / Damien HS) and freshman Andrew Milcovich (Walnut Creek, Calif. / De La Salle HS) led the team, scoring three goals apiece. Hamilton was responsible for putting two goals in the net. Stachowski was credited with five saves.
