Pepperdine interim head water polo coach Jack Kocur did not get the results he was looking for two weeks ago at the NorCal tournament, but he knows there are still a lot of games left in the season and is looking for his team to return to its winning ways this weekend.
"We need to bounce back from the NorCal tournament," commented the former Pepperdine All-American. "We have had two weeks of hard training and we need to focus and battle through this weekend. The team is looking forward to the home opener on Sunday against Santa Barbara. They were the last team to beat us at the NorCal and we would like to avenge that loss."
Freshman JP MacDonell is leading the team in goals with 19 this season and has recorded three hat tricks over the first nine contests. Sophomore Matt Lee is second on the team in assists with nine and third on the team in goals with eight. Freshman Travis Stachowski has stopped a team-high 51 shots in the cage.
Pepperdine travels to Los Angeles for a noon start against top-ranked USC. The Trojans have won 26 consecutive games dating back to a 5-4 loss last season in Malibu. On Sunday, the Waves host UC Santa Barbara in Pepperdine's home opener. The ball is scheduled to drop at 1 p.m. (PDT) at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
