MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine water polo team dropped a 12-11 decision Sunday afternoon to the Long Beach State 49ers in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play. The loss drops the Waves to 12-15 (1-4) MPSF on the year, while The Beach improves to 8-14 (1-5 MPSF).
Brett Auer (Newport Beach, Calif.) scored the first of his team-high three goals to open the scoring on the day. Jason Langten (Irvine, Calif.) put the Waves up 2-0 two minutes later with his only goal of the day. LBSU would score consecutive goals to tie the game but Pepperdine went on a 3-1 run to lead 5-3 at the end of the first period.
The Waves scored three of the first four goals in the second period and lead 8-4 mid-way through the second quarter but the lead was cut to two, 8-6, at the half.
The two teams traded goals to open the third as Pepperdine maintained its two-goal advantage, 10-8. The Beach scored three straight goals in the final 2:37 of the period to take its first lead of the day, 11-10. Clayton Snyder (Seal Beach, Calif.) scored early in the fourth quarter to tie the contest at 11-all, but it would be the last time Pepperdine would score as LBSU scored the final goal of the game at the 4:25 mark.
Pepperdine will return to action Saturday when it hosts UCLA at noon. Sunday, the Waves will host USC, also at noon.
