MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine water polo team picked up its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) victory of the season Sunday afternoon in Stockton, Calif. as the Waves defeated the Pacific Tigers, 9-8 in overtime.
Senior Doug Mann (Coronado, Calif.) scored three goals for Pepperdine (11-13, 1-3 MPSF), including the game-winner in overtime. JP MacDonell (Redwood City, Calif.) added two scores, while four others scored once.
Mann got the Waves out to a 1-0 lead but it would take a Brett Auer (Newport Beach, Calif.) goal with 1:21 remaining in the first quarter to tie the game up at 2-all.
Nick Corjon (La Verne, Calif.) put Pepperdine back on top, 3-2, with a goal at the 6:22 mark of the second quarter. The goal was the fist of five in the period as the Waves took a 7-4 lead into the half.
Pepperdine was held without a goal in the third, but limited the Tigers to one score and lead by two, 7-5 heading into the final eight minutes of play.
Pacific would cut the lead to one, 7-6, before MacDonell's second goal of the day put the Waves back up by two with 5:56 remaining. The Tigers would tie the contest at 8-8 with a goal at the 4:07 and 1:33 marks but fail to covert on a 6-on-5 chance in the final minute as the game went into overtime.
Mann scored 31 seconds into the first overtime and Pepperdine pitched a shutout the rest of the way for the victory.
The Waves will return to action Thurs., Nov. 2 when they host cross-town rival Loyola Marymount at 2 p.m. PT. On Sunday, Pepperdine will head to Long Beach State for a noon conference tilt.
