MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine water polo team suffered a 7-3 loss Sunday morning in the first of two games on the final day of the SoCal Tournament in Los Angeles. The loss drops Pepperdine's record to 8-10 overall heading into the seventh-place game later today.
JP MacDonell (Redwood City, Calif.) Brett Auer (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Preston Lujan (Coronado, Calif.) accounted for the three Pepperdine goals.
The Waves were held scoreless in the first half of the defensive-minded contest. The game was far from out of reach after the initial 16 minutes of play as the Cardinal held a slim 3-0 lead at the half.
MacDonell pulled the Waves within two, 3-1 at the 6:51 mark of the third period but Pepperdine would not score again until the final 22 seconds of the third, making the score 5-2. Stanford would tack on a sixth goal with just two seconds in the period. Each team would add a goal in the fourth, including Lujan's score with 21 seconds remaining in the game.
Pepperdine will return to action at 2 p.m. (PDT) when it faces UC Irvine in the seventh-place game.
