No. 6 Pepperdine Water Polo Caps Off Perfect Weekend

MALIBU, Calif. - After downing both teams in its pool on Saturday, the 6th-ranked Pepperdine men's water polo team capped off a perfect weekend with a pair of victories over No. 9 Loyola Marymount, 10-4, and host team No. 8 UC San Diego, 11-8, on the final day of the Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif.

Pepperdine (3-0) built up a 4-1 lead in its first match of the day against the Lions as sophomore Nick Corjon scored at the 4:51 mark of the first stanza. Senior Jesse Smith's only goal of the match at the 2:23 mark of the second quarter gave the Waves a 5-1 and would prove to be the game winner. Sophomore Grant Miller and freshman Taylor Watson led Pepperdine with two goals apiece as eight different Waves scored in the match.

In the final match of the day Pepperdine's Adam Hewko proved too much for the host Tritons scoring six of the Waves 11 total goals. Hewko opened the match's scoring with a goal at the 6:42 mark of the first period. He would follow with his second score of the match at the 3:23 mark which gave Pepperdine a 2-1 lead. Corjon would keep the Waves in the lead, 3-2, after one quarter of play with a goal at the 2:41 mark.

Hewko tacked on a pair of goals in the second frame, while Smith scored the first of two on the afternoon as Pepperdine led 6-4 after the first half of play. Hewko's third goal of the day snapped a 4-4 tie and gave the Waves a lead they would never relinquish. Smith and Matt Digges scored two goals each to round out the Pepperdine scoring on the day.

In four total matches (one exhibition), Pepperdine never trailed and outscored its opponents by a 42-21 count. Hewko led the Waves with 12 goals followed by Smith's five and Digges' four.

Pepperdine will return at action for its home opener on Sat., Sept. 10 when it takes on No. 9 LMU at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool on the campus of Pepperdine University.
