MALIBU, Calif. - The 6th-ranked Pepperdine men's water polo team topped No. 19 and UC San Diego's `B' team Saturday to place first in pool play heading into Sunday's tournament play. Adam Hewko led all Pepperdine scorers with five goals on the day.
The Waves recorded a 12-3 victory over the Air Force in the first match of the day. Pepperdine led 2-0 after the first stanza. In the second frame, the Waves added six more goals including a pair by Grant Miller and two from Jesse Smith.
In the second match of the day, Pepperdine built a 5-1 lead after the first frame behind two early Hewko scores. Pepperdine would go on to win the match 10-6 for a perfect 2-0 record in its group.
Miller ended the day with three goals as did Doug Mann.
Pepperdine will return at action at 9:10 a.m. when it takes on the winner of group `D' (LMU, Santa Barbara, Pomona). For complete tournament schedule/results visit www.athletics.ucsd.edu.
