MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's water polo team is scheduled to open the 2005 season this weekend at the Triton Invitational in San Diego, Calif. The Waves are preseason ranked at No. 6 and were voted to finish fifth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) by the league's coaches.

The Waves will open the season with an 11:20 a.m. match against No. 19 Air Force Academy as part of its pool play Saturday. Later in the evening, Pepperdine will take on UC San Diego's "B" team in a match that will be counted as an exhibition but will figure in the team's seeding for Sunday's bracket play.

Other teams in this weekend's tournament include, No. 7 UC Irvine, No. 8 UC San Diego, No. 9 Loyola Marymount, No. 11 UC Santa Barbara, No. 17 Redlands and No. 18 Whittier. Sunday's schedule will begin at 7 a.m. and run until the final match at 6:55 p.m.
