Malibu, Calif. - No. 8 Pepperdine defeated the 60th-ranked Fresno State Bulldogs for its 17th win of the season with a dominating 6-1 performance Wednesday at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. The Waves remain perfect at home (12-0) with the win, while Fresno State falls to 9-8 on the year.
Pepperdine took the 1-0 lead when the teams of Scott Doerner/Pedro Rico and Kevin Borzenski/Alexis Rafidison registered wins on courts one and three, respectively. Doerner/Rico had a 6-0 advantage until the Bulldogs were able to hold serve, but it was too late as the Waves clinched the point with the 8-2 victory.
Ivor Lovrak's 6-1, 6-0 win over Sam Gibbs was neutralized on the scoresheet when Pepperdine's Richard Johnson was forced to retire due to illness, giving Andy Sinn the win and Fresno State its only point.
Leading 2-1 the Waves went on to win the four remaining singles matches, including the clinching win from Scott Doerner. His 6-1, 6-0 win over Jakub Cech was Doerner's 16th dual match singles victory of the year, against only two losses.
Jonas Berg bested Charles Irie 6-2, 6-1, and Alexis Rafidison took out Sam Tadevosian 6-1, 6-2 for Pepperdine's 5-1 lead. The Waves' sixth point came on court two, where West Coast Conference `Player of the Month' Pedro Rico won the first set tiebreaker 10-8 before taking the second set 6-2.
