Waves Win Season-Finale, 9-7, over LBSU

MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine closed out the 2005 season with a 9-7 victory over Long Beach State on the final day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) held in Los Angeles. The victory was the 18th of the year for the Waves who placed seventh in this weekend's tournament.

Pepperdine (18-11) scored less than a minute into today's tilt and secured a one-goal, 4-3, lead with a goal in the first quarter's closing moments. Matt Digges added to the Waves' lead early in the second frame and after a Long Beach State goal in the final minute, Pepperdine led 5-4 at the half.

The 49ers evened the game at 5-all early in the third period but Pepperdine score two-unanswered goals and took a 7-5 lead into the final seven minutes of play. The lead would reach three and Adam Hewko's third goal of the game maintained the Wave's margin of victory after LBSU had pulled within one at 8-7.

Hewko led Pepperdine in scoring, while Grant Miller and Matt MacDonnell each scored twice and Digges scored once. Jesse Smith was held without a goal in his final collegiate game and senior Ben Tait stopped 12 goals in the cage in his final outing as a Wave.
