MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's water polo team suffered its four-consecutive loss Saturday afternoon after falling to UCLA, 7-5, at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center in Los Angeles, Calif., in Mountain Pacific Sport Federation (MPSF) action.
Pepperdine (15-9, 1-5 MPSF) received a goal from senior Jesse Smith at the 1:30 mark to take a 1-0 lead in the game. UCLA (18-6, 4-2 MPSF) would even the game with just :03 on the clock in the opening frame and then outscore the Waves, 3-1, in the second stanza to hold a 4-2 lead at the half.
The Bruins would score a goal in the opening minute of the second half, taking a 5-2 lead before sophomore Adam Hewko netted back-to-back goals, cutting the deficit to one, 5-4.
But that would be as close as the Waves would get as UCLA scored twice more in the final frame. Doug Mann's score with 2:31 remaining in the contest provided the final score of the day.
Pepperdine wraps up the 2005 regular season next weekend at home when it hosts Pacific at noon on Saturday and Long Beach State on Sunday. The Waves are fighting for a seed in the conference tournament to be held at USC over Thanksgiving weekend.
