Smith, Pepperdine Too Much For UC Santa Barbara

Oct. 8, 2005

MALIBU, Calif. - No. 5 Pepperdine's Jesse Smith scored four times and the Waves made true on 3-of-6 with a man-advantage en route to an 11-5 victory over No. 15 UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool on the campus of Pepperdine University.

The Waves (10-4, 1-1 MPSF) recorded its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) victory of the season by scoring the first four goals of the game, all by different Pepperdine athletes. Matt Digges wasted no time in opening the scoring on the day giving the Waves a 1-0 lead less than one minute into the contest. Adam Hewko gave Pepperdine its second goal of the day at the 3:31 mark, while Smith and Grant Miller both scored in the final 1:10 of the opening frame.

UC Santa Barbara (7-6, 0-1 MPSF) ended the shutout with just five ticks remaining in the opening frame as Ramiro Saldain found the back of the net during a free-ball scramble in front of the Pepperdine goal.

The Waves' lead was never challenged as Pepperdine tacked on three more goals in the second quarter and held a 7-3 lead at the half.

Smith scored three-consecutive goals for Pepperdine spanning the end of the second period and beginning of the third. Jason Langten's goal at the 5:16 mark of the third period put the Waves up by six, 10-4.

Pepperdine will return to action next weekend when it travels to the NorCal Tournament in Berkeley, Calif. The Waves will be the No. 5 seed in the two-day tournament.
