Dec. 24, 2003
The American Water Polo Coaches Association named its All-American team for the 2003 season and for the third time in his collegiate career, junior Jesse Smith found his name on that list today. The AWPA announced him to the first team while teammate Michael Hausmann earned second team honors.
Despite missing five games due to an injury, Smith found his way as the leading scorer on the Pepperdine Waves water polo team by scoring over 50 goals this season. After competiting in the World University games last summer with Team USA, Smith now plans to train for the 2004 Olympics in hopes of representing his country. Meanwhile, Hausmann had a stellar career this past season after recording over 50 goals himself.
The Player of the Year for Division I was Tony Azevedo from Stanford University. Azevedo, a junior, led Stanford to the NCAA championship game for the third consecutive season. Azevedo garnered Player of the Year honors in 2001 and 2002 as well. Coach of the Year for Division I was Jovan Vavic of the University of Southern California.
