MALIBU, Calif. -- Behind a balanced attack where every player scored and contributed in rebounding, the Pepperdine Waves walloped UC Irvine 71-47 on Monday at the Bren Events Center. Senior Nicole Funn led all scorers with 16 points and junior Shanell Law recorded 12 points, respectively.
With the win, Pepperdine improves to 1-1 on the season while the Anteaters fall to 0-2 overall.
The Waves got off to a quick 7-0 run and grabbed that momentum and never looked back. Pepperdine led 35-18 at the half as UCI shot just 18 percent from the field (6-33) compared to the Waves' 48 percent (14-29). The Anteaters opened the second half on a 9-2 run to close the gap to 10 (27-37) with 16:36 remaining, but Pepperdine returned the favor with a 14-4 run to extend the lead to 20 (31-51) with 10:41 left on the clock.
Law went 4-for-8 from the field, including 3-for-6 at the three-pointer. Funn shot 50 percent from the field and added five rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Shannon Mayberry tallied a game-high seven rebounds and scored eight points, while Kelli Spencer recorded nine points and five rebounds. Junior Jennifer Lacy went a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, accounted for nine points, and grabbed five boards.
Other outstanding performances went to Kelly Greathouse who pulled down six rebounds and Jasmine Clarendon who was 3-for-3 from the field for six points. Freshman Kerra Wodarski added a game-high six assists to help guide the Waves on offense.
Kristen Green led UCI with 15 points and eight rebounds. Lauren Yadon pitched in 10 points and six rebounds. Jackie Lord, in her first appearance as an Anteater since transferring from Cal, had five points and four assists in 18 minutes of play.
Pepperdine shot 50 percent in the match (29-58) versus the Anteaters 25.4 percent (15-59). The Waves out-rebounded UCI 47 to 36 and tallied 28 points in the paint against Irvine's 12. Furthermore, the Waves' bench out-scored the Anteaters 31 to 10.
Next up for the Waves is the Yellowbook Turkey Shoot-out Tournament in Malibu during Thanksgiving weekend. Pepperdine will host UC Riverside at 5 p.m. on Friday at Firestone Fieldhouse. Oklahoma and Siena are also participating in the tournament.
