Women's Basketball

Dear Diary...

Pepperdine basketball players will take Waves fans behind the scenes as the orange and blue of Malibu plays its 2003-04 women's basketball schedule. We've also added a link so you can submit your own questions for players to respond in their next entry. Being a collegiate basketball player creates an interesting journal, but being a collegiate basketball player at perhaps the most beautiful school in the country that is flocked with celebrities is a whole other story. Enjoy...

Hey Waves Fans!

This is the beginning of what could be one of the most challenging weeks I have had as a Wave. Last Wednesday I found out that my dad's baby sister suffered two brain aneurysms and was in a coma. She complained of a headache earlier that day and collapsed as a result of it. She was rushed to the hospital where she was alert and coherent however, she would suffer another aneurysm while being taken to another hospital that could better treat her condition. There she laid in a coma for several hours before her brain function ceased and blood pressure dropped. Doctors said that nothing could have been done...she was gone. Yet the memory of her still remains in so many ways. Our family donated her organs to science and other people in need. She will be missed more than she knows.

This day would have been far more challenging if it weren't for the love and support of my coaches and teammates. On Mondays, Shan (Shandrika Lee), Nicole (Funn) and I lift weights at 10:30 because we have class all day and can't lift with the team. Today we are maxing out. For those of you who don't know what that is, it's one rep of a maximum weight you can lift without assistance. I hit a personal best today, 150 pounds! I never thought that one day I would be lifting that kind of weight. Coming in as a freshman I only reached a max of 95. I was proud of myself.

After weights I rushed to class where I would spend the next four hours. On Mondays and Thursdays my classes run into practice time. I get out of class at four and practice starts at 3:30. After class I rush to the training room to treat my bumps and bruises. About 4:30 I got to practice. Today was different because I was struggling with something outside of basketball. But my team and coaches were right there to pick me up.

This week was also different because we were preparing to play Stanford on Friday. All I could think about was how I had to try to be focused despite everything else going on. I tried my best. After practice I went home and packed my bags for a trip that I hopped I'd never have to take. I prepared to go up to northern California to be with the rest of the family. After packing I finished a little homework and enjoyed my nightly banter with my roommates Kelli Spencer and Beth. Every night after our talks I watch the Cosby's and head off to bed about 1:00 a.m. or so.

Well, to say the least this week was hectic and I couldn't have gotten through it without the great support groups around me. I am really blessed to be around such great people. I hope you enjoyed reading a little about my life, take care.

Jen
