MALIBU, Calif. --- Senior two-time All-American Jesse Smith and junior driver Josh Acosta scored three-goals each as No. 3 Pepperdine topped ninth-ranked UC Irvine, 11-6, in non-conference men's water polo action at the Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Scott Harvey added two goals, while senior Michael Hausmann, junior Jordan Keitel, and freshman Garrit Barth pitched in one goal, respectively.
The win improves the Waves to 10-2 overall while UCI slides to 8-9.
"This is the first game we've had at home in almost a month," said head coach, Terry Schroeder. "It felt good to play well in front of our own crowd and I think the fans noticed how well we've progessed over the last month. It was a good win for us today."
On Pepperdine's first possession, goalie Ben Tait passed the ball to Acosta who gave a perfect assist to teammate Smith at 6:09 to make the score 1-0. Irvine's Dan Noon scored at 3:59 to tie the game up and after the Waves' Smith completed a shot at 3:42, Pepperdine controlled the remainder of the game from that point.
Noon, Phil Garcia, and Rick Merlo all split two goals apiece for UCI.
Junior goalie Ben Tait had nine saves for Pepperdine.
The Waves continue their four-game home stretch on Sunday when they face No. 6 UC San Deigo at noon.
