BERKELEY, Calif. — No. 16 Pepperdine women's tennis (9-3, 3-0 WCC) claimed a 4-2 victory at No. 10 Cal (5-2, 3-1 ACC) Sunday afternoon from Hellman Tennis Complex.
The win marked Pepperdine's third victory over a top-10 team this season. The Waves have now won five matches in six days on the week, capped by today's victory.
The Waves fell behind 1-0 with Cal winning the doubles point, before claiming four singles matches while dropping just one.
Anastasiia Grechkina clinched the match on court three, with
Duru Söke,
Chantal Sauvant and
Sonja Zhiyenbayeva also picking up singles wins to aid the victory.
The Bears went ahead 1-0 after taking the doubles point with wins on courts two and three.
Živa Falkner and Zhiyenbayeva saw their match at the No. 1 position abandoned at 4-4.
Pepperdine found success early on in singles, winning the first set in four of six matches.
Söke evened the score at one apiece with a win on court six as the first singles match to finish. She defeated Sophia Hernandez 6-1, 6-1 to improve to 7-0 on the season.
The Bears retook the lead briefly with a win on court one, before
Chantal Sauvant won her bout on court four. Sauvant defeated Mille Johanna Moerk 6-3, 6-1, moving to 6-4 on the season in singles.
Zhiyenbayeva gave the Waves a 3-2 advantage next with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court two over No. 57 Mao Mushika. It marked the second ranked win of the season for Zhiyenbayeva, who is now 9-1 on the dual match season.
Grechkina clinched the match in a three-set victory at the No. 3 position next. After dropping the first set 6-2, Grechkina bounced back to win set two by a 7-5 margin. In the third set, Grechkina got two breaks early to get out to a 5-1 lead, before clinching the match at 6-2.
Alexia Harmon went unfinished on five, having won the first set 7-5 before dropping the second, 6-2.
