No. 16 Women's Tennis Earns 4-1 Win at No. 24 Stanford

PALO ALTO, Calif. — No. 16 Pepperdine women's tennis (7-3, 2-0 WCC) extended its winning streak to four matches with a 4-1 victory at No. 24 Stanford (6-6, 2-2 ACC) Friday afternoon.

The Waves improved to 4-0 on the road this season and 5-1 against ranked opponents with the victory.

Duru Söke, Sonja Zhiyenbayeva and Alexia Harmon each earned singles victories for the Waves to secure the win, as the Waves also won the doubles point to begin. The trio of Söke, Zhiyenbayeva and Harmon have now combined to win their past 13 singles matches.

Pepperdine's dominance in doubles continued with a pair of 6-3 wins on courts one and two. Živa Falkner and Zhiyenbayeva earned the win at the No. 1 position over No. 72 Caroline Driscoll/Monika Ekstrand, earning their second ranked victory of the campaign.

Chantal Sauvant and Anastasiia Grechkina improved to 6-0 on the season to clinch the doubles point at the No. 2 position, with Söke and Shihomi Leong going unfinished on court three. The three doubles pairings in the lineup for the Waves today have now combined to win their past 12 matches.

Söke made quick work of her match on court six to begin singles, dropping just two games across two sets to pick up the 6-0, 6-2 win over Morgan Shaffer. Söke is now 5-0 on the dual match season.

Zhiyenbayeva then logged her team-leading eighth singles win of the season on court three. She took down Caroline Driscoll in two sets, winning the tiebreak in the first set (7-5) before claiming set two by a 6-3 margin. Zhiyenbayeva is now 8-1 on the season in her freshman campaign.

The Cardinal got one point back on four, but the Waves responded quickly after to clinch the match at 4-1.

Harmon defeated Sein Myoung on court five by a 6-2, 7-5 scoreline, giving Pepperdine the ranked win. Harmon has now won her past five singles matches and sits at 7-2 on the season.

Falkner's match was unfinished on court one against No 46 Monika Ekstrand. Ekstrand had won the first set in a tiebreak while the second set was in the middle of another tiebreak (5-5) when abandoned.

Grechkina had claimed a tiebreak win in the first set over No. 32 Alyssa Ahn, as the second set was knotted up at 5-5 when the match was clinched.

The Waves improved to 6-34 all-time against the Cardinal, but have now won six of the past eight matchups dating back to 2016.
