No. 6 Women's Tennis Blanks No. 2 Ohio State, 4-0

MALIBU, Calif. — No. 6 Pepperdine women's tennis (10-3, 3-0 WCC) dominated against No. 2 Ohio State (10-2, 3-0 B1G), taking down the Buckeyes by a score of 4-0 Wednesday afternoon from Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.

The Waves did not drop a single set on any court in the victory, earning the team's fourth win over a top-10 opponent this season. The win marked the seventh consecutive for Pepperdine, and was the second time this season that the Waves knocked off the No. 2 ranked team in the country at home.

Doubles play began with a marquee matchup on court one between a pair of tandems ranked within the top-30 of the ITA doubles rankings. Pepperdine prevailed quickly in the bout, as Živa Falkner and Sonja Zhiyenbaeyva did not drop a single game against No. 17 Teah Chavez/Hephzibah Oluwadare, winning 6-0.

Zhiyenbayeva and Falkner improved to 6-1 on the season with the win, while moving to 3-0 against ranked opponents.

Soon after, Duru Söke and Shihomi Leong earned a 6-3 win on court three to secure the doubles point for the Waves. Anastasiia Grechkina and Chantal Sauvant saw their match go unfinished on two, while ahead 4-3. Söke and Leong now sit 5-2 as a doubles pairing this season.

Moving to singles, Pepperdine was in control on all six courts, winning the first set on each. The Waves were able to take care of business quickly with the match running just a tick over two hours.

Alexia Harmon was the first to prevail in her match at flight six, topping Oluwadare 6-3, 6-0. Harmon's win marked her seventh consecutive singles victory as she now sits at 9-2 on the dual match season.

Zhiyenbayeva then tabbed the highest-ranked win of her career so far, defeating No. 3 Luciana Perry 6-4, 6-3 on court two. Zhiyenbayeva is now 10-1 on the season and has won five straight matches for the second time this season. 

Clinching the match soon after was Grechkina, who took down Sophia Cisselgnatiev by sets of 6-4 and 6-2. It marked the second consecutive match that Grechkina has clinched for the Waves, as she has improved to 5-3 on the season with three straight victories.

Sauvant went unfinished on court four, while leading 6-2, 5-2 against No. 102 Audrey Spencer.

Söke had won her first set 6-3 against No. 67 Nao Nishino before being abandoned in set two. 

Falkner won a first set tiebreak over No. 4 Teah Chavez, winning the tiebreak by a 7-3 margin. The match was abandoned in set two while tied 2-2.

Pepperdine is now 7-1 against ranked opponents this season, accounting for seven of the team's 10 victories.

The Waves also improved to 3-3 in the all-time series with the Buckeyes with the win.

Pepperdine women's tennis has been a consistent powerhouse in the collegiate scene, reaching 40 NCAA Tournaments since 1982 including 28 straight appearances. Since 2018, the program has seen three national runner-ups between both singles and doubles while reaching an NCAA Regional as a team eight times in the past nine tournaments. The success at the conference level has been paramount with 33 WCC Championships including an active streak of 11 consecutive conference titles. With its 24 total All-Americans, the program has also consistently sent players to the pro circuit following their time in Malibu.
