SANTA CRUZ, Calif.  —  The Pepperdine beach volleyball team swept the first day of the West Coast Challenge without dropping a single set as the Waves (10-7) swept both Portland (2-6) and Saint Mary's (10-11) on Friday.
 
PORTLAND RECAP
Emma Bubelis (Northbrook, Ill.) and Marley Johnson (Stuart, Fla.) gave Pepperdine its first point with a quick 21-6, 21-5 win on court five. Madison Oriskovich (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Gabriella Perez (Loomis, Calif.) then put the Waves up 2-0 after cruising to a 21-15, 21-16 victory in slot No. 2.
 
Over in position No. 4, Emi Erickson (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Deanie Woodruff (Point Loma, Calif.) clinched the duel with a 21-15, 21-12 win. Emma Eden (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Ella Foti (Madison, Wis.) then made it 4-0 with a 21-15, 21-16 win on court three before Kate Clermont (Burlington, Ontario, Canada) and McKenna Thomas (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) completed the sweep with a gritty 21-19, 21-18 victory in slot No. 1.
 
SAINT MARY'S RECAP
Bubelis and Johnson once again put the Waves up 1-0 after winning court five in straight-sets, 21-14, 21-14. The Waves' No. 1 duo - Clermont and Thomas - then won their first set 22-20 before cruising to a 21-8 second set victory to make it 2-0 in favor of Pepperdine.
 
Oriskovich and Perez then clinched the duel for the Waves with a 21-19, 21-16 win on court two. In slot No. 3, Eden and Foti collected their second win of the day with set scores of 21-19, 21-18 before Erickson and Woodruff pulled out a highly contested 22-20, 21-19 win on court five to complete the Waves' second sweep of the day.
