Pepperdine Sweeps Final Day of the Asics Classic

MALIBU, Calif.  —  The Pepperdine beach volleyball team swept the final day of the Asics Classic on Saturday as the Waves (8-7) swept Vanguard (8-9) in the morning before defeating South Florida 3-2 in the afternoon.
 
VANGUARD RECAP
In the first flight, Emi Erickson (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Deanie Woodruff (Point Loma, Calif.) quickly swept court four 21-15, 21-10 before Gabriella Perez (Loomis, Calif.) and Madision Oriskovich (Santa Barbara, Calif.) won court two in two-sets (21-15, 21-17) to put the Waves in front 2-0.
 
In position No. 1, Kate Clermont (Burlington, Ontario, Canada) and McKenna Thomas (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) clinched the duel for the Waves with another sweep, 21-8, 21-10. Emma Eden (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Ella Foti (Madison, Wis.) then made it 4-0 with a dominant 21-8, 21-9 straight-set win on court four, and Emma Bubelis (Northbrook, Ill.) and Marley Johnson (Stuart, Fla.) completed the sweep with a 21-14, 21-11 victory in slot No. 5.
 
SOUTH FLORIDA RECAP
In slot No. 4, Erickson and Woodruff dropped a highly contested first set 20-22, but fought back and forced a third with a convincing 21-14 win in the second. From there, the Waves pair continued their momentum and put Pepperdine in front 1-0 with a 15-10 win in the final set. On court two, Oriskovich and Perez lost their first set 16-21, but were also able to battle back and win their court as they won the next two sets 21-19, 15-7.
 
Holding a 2-0 advantage at the start of the second flight, Eden and Foti clinched the duel for the Waves with a 21-19, 21-12 two-set victory in position No. 3. Looking to complete their second sweep of the day, Pepperdine also won the first set on courts one and court five, however the Bulls bounced back and won the next two sets on both courts to make the final score 3-2.

UP NEXT
The Waves will head to Santa Cruz, Calif. for the WCC Midseason Challenge next weekend. Pepperdine will take on Portland and Saint Mary's on Friday, while Saturday's matchups will be determined after the end of the competition on Friday.
