Beach Volleyball Defeats South Florida; Earns Split Results

MALIBU, Calif.  —  The Pepperdine beach volleyball team earned split results on the first day of the Asics Classic on Friday.
 
The Waves (6-7) defeated South Florida 3-2 in the morning before falling to Concordia (16-7) by a score of 4-1 in the afternoon.
 
SOUTH FLORIDA RECAP
Emma Bubelis (Northbrook, Ill.) and Marley Johnson (Stuart, Fla.) jumped in front 6-1 and eventually won their first set 21-14 in slot No. 4. However, the Bulls duo won the next two sets 21-15, 15-7 to take a 1-0 advantage. On court two, Pepperdine's duo of Gabriella Perez (Loomis, Calif.) and Madision Oriskovich (Santa Barbara, Calif.) split their first two sets 21-16, 18-21 and were forced to play a third. The Waves pair found themselves down 12-13 in the final set, but Perez and Oriskovich won four out of the next five points to take the set 16-14 and tie things up 1-1 after the first flight.
 
Emi Erickson (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Deanie Woodruff (Point Loma, Calif.) opened the second flight with a 21-10, 22-20 sweep on court five before Kate Clermont (Burlington, Ontario, Canada) and McKenna Thomas (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) clinched the duel for the Waves with a 23-21, 21-16 sweep in position No. 1. Trying to make it a 4-1 final in favor of Pepperdine, Emma Eden (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Ella Foti (Madison, Wis.) won their first set 21-17 on court three, but the South Florida pair was able to win the next two sets 22-20 and 17-15 to win the court and make the final score 3-2.
 
CONCORDIA RECAP
The Golden Eagles opened the match with a 21-18, 21-12 straight-set win on court two to take an early 1-0 advantage. Erickson and Woodruff then won their first set 21-17 on court four before Concordia forced a third set with a 21-18 win in the second. In the third, the Waves duo won a hard-fought battle 18-16 to tie the duel 1-1.
 
In the second flight, the Golden Eagles came out and swept court five 21-15, 22-20 to take a 2-1 lead. Over in slot No. 1, Clermont and Thomas dropped their first set 18-21, but bounced back and forced a third with a dominant 21-14 win in the second. Concordia's pair then won the final set 15-11 to clinch the duel before the Golden Eagles won court three in three-sets 21-14, 16-21, 15-12 to make it a 4-1 final in their favor.
