MALIBU, Calif. — The Pepperdine beach volleyball team fell to both #9 California and #10 Long Beach State to conclude the Pepperdine Challenge today.

CALIFORNIA RECAP
The Bears jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as their duos swept courts two and four with respective scores of 21-14, 21-19, and 21-16 , 21-15.
California would then clinch the match in slot No. 5 as they won the court 21-7, 21-5 before also taking court three 21-16, 21-13 to extend their lead, 4-0.
On court one,
Kate Clermont (Burlington, Ontario, Canada) and
McKenna Thomas (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) took the first set 21-17, but the Bears battled back and won the second 21-11 to force an all-deciding third set. In the final set, California's pair won the court in a hard-fought battle by a score of 15-13 to complete the sweep.
LONG BEACH STATE RECAP
To open play, the Beach won a tightly contested court two against
Madison Oriskovich (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and
Gabriella Perez (Loomis, Calif.) 21-17, 21-18 to take a 1-0 lead.
Emma Bubelis (Northbrook, Ill.) and
Marley Johnson (Stuart, Fla.) went toe-to-toe with the Beach pair in slot No. 4, but Long Beach State ultimately took the court 25-23, 21-16 to take a 2-0 advantage into the second flight.
The Beach clinched the match after winning court five in straight sets, 21-12, 21-16 before going up 4-0 with a two-set win in slot No. 1, 21-12, 21-10.
Playing together for the first time,
Emma Eden (Albuquerque, N.M.) and
Ella Foti (Madison) won a highly contested 21-19 first set, before dominating the second 21-12 and winning court three to help the Waves avoid the sweep.
UP NEXT
The Waves are set to take a trip down the road to Los Angeles, Calif. to compete in the Battle 4 L.A. on Friday and Saturday. Pepperdine will take on tournament hosts USC and UCLA in addition to Concordia and CSUN next weekend.
