SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — For the second consecutive week and the third time this year, the #16 Pepperdine women's tennis team swept the West Coast Conference's weekly women's tennis awards.
Freshman Alexia Harmon was named the WCC Singles Player of the Week for the first time this season, while she and her doubles partner Anastasiia Grechkina took home WCC Doubles Team of the Week for the second straight week. So far, four Waves have earned seven WCC weekly awards (the others are Savannah Broadus and Vivian Yang). Both figures lead the league.
During Pepperdine's Texas trip to Rice and #2 Texas A&M, Harmon went 2-0 with both wins in straight sets. She not only picked up her second ranked win of the season with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over #125 Daria Smetannikov of #2 Texas A&M, but also extended her team-best win streak to six matches. Harmon leads the team with a 14-5 overall record this year while tying the team-high with six dual singles victories.
In doubles, Harmon and Grechkina continued their winning ways with two more wins at the second position. The freshman duo beat Rice sophomores Divna Ratkovic and Nithesa Selvaraj 6-4 last Saturday before fending off Texas A&M's Daria Smetannikov and Mia Kupres in another 6-4 win. Despite playing together for just five matches, Harmon and Grechkina lead the team with three straight wins and already have two ranked wins.
Harmon, Grechkina and the Waves will host California this Saturday at noon. All pertinent information can be found on the women's tennis team's schedule page at pepperdinewaves.com.
