MALIBU, Calif. – Pepperdine swimming welcomed UC Santa Barbara and UC San Diego to Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool for a tri meet. This rainy afternoon, the Gauchos and Tritons emerged victorious, but the Waves had their fair share of highlights throughout the torrential downpour.
"I'm so incredibly impressed with the Waves' performance at home today," said head coach Ellie Monobe. "We knew the weather could play a factor, but the team went out and earned two new school records. The women are primed and ready for a strong midseason performance next week and I am so grateful for the opportunity to lead them as we head into the final chapter of the fall. Definitely a memorable day to wrap up my time at Raleigh Runnels." The meet marked the final home meet for Monobe with the Waves.
Emma Guglielmello and Sophia Blietz both set program records to headline the Waves performance today. The latter, in only her freshman year, has already added her name to multiple top tens but today she put her name at the top of a list. Blietz swam to a time of 2:00.37 in the 200 back to set the new benchmark. Guglielmello's record came in the 1000 free. The junior has excelled at distance throughout the young season, and today finished her event in 10:16.35.
Aliyah Fan had the highest finish of any Wave today. She placed second in the 200 free with a time of 1:52.57. She also took fourth in the 100 fly by virtue of her 55.38 result.
Layla Busquets placed fourth in the 100 back (56.09), with senior Kylie Taylor right behind her for fifth (56.26).
In addition to her aforementioned record, Emma Guglielmello also had an admirable performance for the Waves in the 500 free—-earning fourth (5:04.53).
The women's final event of the day saw them finish fourth in the 200 free relay. Maile Sullivan, Elliot Easton, Layla Busquets and anchor Anna Ryan swam to a time of 1:35.18.
