Women's Tennis Coasts into the Second Round

MALIBU, Calif. — In a thoroughly dominant showing, the 6-seed Pepperdine women's tennis team blanked SIUE 4-0 to win the program's 17th consecutive NCAA Tournament win at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center on Friday afternoon.

The Waves (18-6, 6-0 West Coast Conference) won both doubles matches 6-0 and saw Savannah Broadus, Nikki Redelijk and Vivian Yang all won 6-0, 6-0 to clinch the match, which wrapped up in less than two hours. Friday's win sets up a second-round match against #26 Arizona State — which needed a tiebreak, third-set win on the final court to beat #35 Northwestern 4-3 — at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center. First serve is at 1 p.m.

In doubles, Redelijk and Vivian Yang beat their opponents 6-0 on the second position before the nation's second-ranked doubles team of Broadus and Janice Tjen clinched the doubles point with their 6-0 win. When the Waves wrapped up the doubles point, Anna Campana and Lisa Zaar were up 4-3 at the third position.

Singles play was equally lopsided. All six Waves won their first sets by a break or more; as a team, the Waves gave up just nine games between the six singles matches. First, #12 Broadus cruised through her first set against Jordan Schifano 6-0 before matching that result in the second set. Aside from holding serve on deuce point to go up 4-0, Broadus faced little resistance in the straight-set win.

Shortly thereafter, both #80 Redelijk and Yang  were in a race to finish their matches and clinch for the Waves. Redelijk wrapped up her 6-0, 6-0 win over Fabiola Perez at the fifth position seconds before Yang clinched the match with her 6-0, 6-0 win over Cydney Rogers a court over at the sixth position. Everyone else on the Waves' roster was up when Yang clinched.

With the result, SIUE ends its season with an 18-4 record and an Ohio Valley Conference tournament title. Pepperdine hasn't lost a first-round NCAA Tournament match since 2013 or an NCAA Tournament match at Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center since 2006.
