SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Highlighted by solid doubles play, the Pepperdine women's tennis team completed the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regionals in San Diego on Friday.
While both Pepperdine teams that played won their doubles matches handily, the Waves also saw Savannah Broadus, Liam Oved and Alexia Harmon win two singles matches to reach tomorrow's round of 16. NCAA bids at this tournament will go to both singles finalists and the doubles champion next Tuesday.
Continuing their strong showing from their previous tournament at USC earlier this month, the Pepperdine freshmen rolled in their opening-round doubles matches to join 2-seed Broadus and Vivian Yang in tomorrow's round of 32. Taylor Goetz and Duru Söke won their third-consecutive match with an 8-5 victory over Kennedy Buntrock and Romane Mosse of Cal Poly. Playing in their first match as a duo, fellow freshmen Oved and Harmon blanked Thea Jagare and Pamela Badillo Hernandez of Long Beach State, 8-0.
Despite already earning an NCAA bid at the ITA All-American Championships in September, Broadus returned to the court on Friday in an effort to improve her NCAA seeding. The nation's eighth-ranked singles player cruised by dropping just one game in a pair of straight-set victories to bring her career total to 108 singles wins. She dispatched ASU's Aiya Nupbay 6-1, 6-0 before blanking Maia Sung of USC 6-0, 6-0. Broadus is now two wins away from becoming a top-5 winningest player in program history; she trails All-American and 2010 Pepperdine Athletics Hall of Fame inductee Pam Jung's 109 wins.
Broadus will be joined in the round of 16 by Oved, who won handily in both her matches on Friday. Oved beat Arizona junior Danielle Tuhten 6-1, 6-2 before beating Arizona State sophomore Ada Piestrzynska 6-1, 6-3. Oved will take on UCLA's Kate Fakih — who was ranked 12th in the ITA Newcomer Rankings — tomorrow.
Fellow freshman Harmon rounded out the singles highlights for the Waves by also going 2-0 on Friday. Harmon, who is No. 17 in the ITA Newcomer Rankings, beat UCLA's Olivia Center 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 before routing Parker Fry of USC 6-4, 7-6.
Elsewhere in the singles draw, Goetz, Söke and Yang fell in their opening-round matches. Consolation matches will continue throughout the tournament.
