All-American Lisa Zaar Returns for Her Fifth Year

MALIBU, Calif. — She’s back.

The #8 Pepperdine women’s tennis team received good news for the 2024 season, as senior Lisa Zaar announced she would return for her fifth year of eligibility.

“I am excited to announce that I will be coming back to Pepperdine,” Zaar said. “I will use my last semester of eligibility to compete with and for the Waves! A big thanks to the continued support from staff and university members, as well as family and friends for making this all possible.”

An 2022 ITA All-American, and four-time All-WCC first-team selection across singles and doubles, Zaar has been a consistent contributor for the Waves ever since stepping foot in Malibu. Playing everywhere from the first through sixth positions in her collegiate career, Zaar has a .821 (92-20) overall win percentage in singles and a .842 (59-11) win percentage in dual match play. Her 92 career wins rank seventh all-time at Pepperdine and her win percentage of .821 is the third-best in program history.

As a sophomore, Zaar went 3-1 in the Waves’ 2021 National Championship run while playing on the fifth line. Following her successful sophomore season, Zaar ended her junior year ranked No. 17 in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association and No. 50 in doubles with teammate Victoria Flores. She made a run to the quarterfinals in the NCAA Singles Championship to earn All-American status, marking the seventh singles player under head coach Per Nilsson to achieve that feat.

This past year, Zaar played primarily from the first-through-third lines for the Waves as they reached the NCAA Super Regional for the third straight season. Zaar qualified for the NCAA Singles Tournament for the second year and finished the season ranked No. 45 in singles and No. 59 in doubles with teammate Bunyawi Thamchaiwat.

In the classroom, Zaar was named an ITA Scholar-Athlete in 2022, plus she is a three-time WCC All-Academic Team selection. She was named the Female Wave of the Year this past spring.

Zaar and the No. 8 Waves will kick off the season at the Freeman Memorial Tournament, held in Las Vegas, Nev. from Jan. 12-14.
