Women's Tennis Picks up Two Singles Wins and Two Doubles Wins in Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Highlighting the Pepperdine women's tennis team's second day at the Freeman Memorial Tournament, Lisa Zaar and Savannah Broadus picked up ranked singles wins, plus Broadus and Janice Tjen cruised to a 6-2 win in doubles on Saturday.

All told, the Waves won two singles matches and two doubles matches (including a consolation win) on the second day of the season-opening three-day tournament. The Waves will wrap up the Freeman Memorial Tournament tomorrow with doubles starting at 10 a.m.

Pepperdine kicked off the day with the nation's No. 4 doubles team of Broadus and Tjen making quick work of Florida's #38 duo of Malwina Rowinska and Qavia Lopez in a 6-2 win. The Waves broke the Gators at 4-1 and forced match point after a key hold, yet the Gators held serve in the next game to prolong the match. But Broadus and Tjen prevailed by winning four of the next five points in the final game.

With the win, the Waves will take on No. 6 Ange Oby Kajuru and Anastasiya Komar of Oklahoma State — the runners-up at the ITA Fall National Championships — in tomorrow's finals.

Elsewhere in doubles, Pepperdine's Nikki Redelijk and Vivian Yang notched their first win as a doubles team with a 6-2 win over UNLV's Salsa Aher and Zita Kovacs.

In singles play, Broadus and Zaar picked up wins over ranked opponents, albeit in different fashions.

Continuing her successful tournament so far, Zaar quickly dispatched #38 Carly Briggs of Florida in a 6-2, 6-0 straight-set win. Zaar was in complete control for the majority of the match: After winning the first set 6-2, Zaar broke Briggs immediately in the second set, then didn't look back in her second win over a ranked opponent this weekend.

Meanwhile, Broadus pulled off a three-set, comeback win over #13 Anastasiya Komar of Oklahoma State. Despite dropping the first set 6-3, Broadus came back to win the second set 6-3. In the third set, Broadus broke Komar and consolidated the break to take a 5-4 lead, yet the match was played on serve to force a tiebreak.

Broadus served to start the tiebreak and won as her overhead shot near the doubles line was out of reach for Komar as she sprinted towards the forehand side. The Pepperdine junior broke Komar on the next point as Komar's forehand shot went into the net.

From that point forward, Broadus never trailed. Although Komar broke Broadus to tie the score at 4-4, Broadus held serve, then broke Komar with a return winner on Komar's second serve to take a 6-4 lead. Komar held serve, then Broadus won the match on a five-hit rally when Komar's return went wide.

The wins from Broadus and Zaar set up an all-Pepperdine final in the Wynn singles draw tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
