Kononov Rejoins Women's Tennis Coaching Staff

MALIBU, Calif. — Onetime Pepperdine women's tennis volunteer assistant coach Jaan Kononov has rejoined Pepperdine as an assistant coach for the 2023-24 season.
Kononov, who has five years of collegiate tennis coaching experience, returns to Malibu after spending last season as an assistant coach at Minnesota. He was on staff at Pepperdine from 2019-22, where he helped the Waves notch two 20-win seasons and reach the NCAA National Championship match in 2021.Prior to his first stint in Malibu, Kononov got his start as a graduate assistant for Grand Canyon University's men's tennis team. During the 2018-19 season, he helped lead the 'Lopes win the Western Athletic Conference regular season and tournament titles and a NCAA Tournament berth.
No stranger to the West Coast Conference, Kononov played his final year of college tennis at the University of San Diego, where helped the Toreros win a WCC title and reach the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2016. He began his college tennis career at Armstrong University, a Division II university in Georgia, before transferring to UMBC, where he played until the athletic department cut its men's tennis program. His career-best ATP ranking was 1692, his best Division I singles ranking was 58 and he was ranked as high as 12th in Division II. A native of Talinn, Estonia, Kononov was part of Estonia's Davis Cup team in 2013. Kononov graduated from USD in 2017 with a degree in business administration, plus he earned his master of science in leadership from GCU in 2019.
