Women's Volleyball Drops to #6 Oregon

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Pepperdine women's volleyball team faced off with #6 Oregon to close out the San Diego Invitational on Saturday afternoon, though the Ducks would ride an early edge through to the finish line, amassing 25-21, 25-16 and 25-17 set wins towards the victory over the Waves.

Junior Grace Chillingworth hit for double-figures for her third match in as many games after blasting 16 kills on a .371 clip.  The feat makes it her 36th career in double digits.  Graduate Riley Patterson also picked up 10 digs, which is good for her 29th match in double-digit digs.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves had the first advantages of the match and kills from Emily Hellmuth and Grace Chillingworth put the squad up by two, 4-2.  More smashes from Vanessa Polk and Birdie Hendrickson, as well as an ace from Chillingworth extended the lead to 11-8.  Each side exchanged blows from that point forward, though Oregon started to close the gap, tying things up at 17-apiece.  After pulling ahead by one, 22-21, the Ducks used the momentum to go on a 4-0 run to end the set with the first win of the day, 25-21.

The opposition came out big in the next set, working for a six-point advantage.  A big attack, featuring 10 kills on 13 errorless swings at the 16-10 mark for a .769 success rate half-way through the set fueled the Ducks.  After tacking on three more points, The Ducks would prove to be too far ahead for the set, eventually finishing with a 25-16 set win.

Oregon carried their advantage into the third set, take a 12-5 lead early in the action with another strong attack output.  The Waves put some kills down, with big efforts from Chillingworth and Polk, but the opposition's lead would be too much for the squad as the Ducks won the set 25-17 to complete the sweep.
