Women's Volleyball Sweeps Past Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — In a second sweep in as many days, the Pepperdine women's volleyball team downed tournament host Cal Poly to close out the Mustang Invitational with a pair of wins at Mott Athletic Center.

Isabel Zelaya dished it out to the Pepperdine (4-6) attackers, leading five Waves to amass seven kills or more throughout the match, while posting the 27th double-double of her career with 37 assists and 12 digs.  Meg Brown and Grace Chillingworth led the Waves attack with 12 and 10 kills to post their 39th and 42nd matches with double-figure kills respectively. Vanessa Polk also amassed a career-high .750 hitting percentage after collecting seven kills with only one error on eight swings.

Chillingworth garnered Mustang Invitational Tournament MVP acclaim, while she and Zelaya were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Waves are now on a three-match winning streak as the squad heads into West Coast Conference play this week with matches slated for Thursday and Saturday against Pacific and LMU in Firestone Fieldhouse.

PLAY-BY-PLAY
The Waves came out of warmups ready to go and collected on a 6-0 run to start the match, fueled by strong serving from Birdie Hendrickson including an ace, kills from Vanessa Polk and Grace Chillingworth and a block collaboration from the same pair.  It would be a lead the opposition was not prepared for and Pepperdine would use it to fuel momentum through the rest of the set, pulling ahead 9-2 before Cal Poly was able to string a few points together.  The Waves buckled down yet again, however, and kills from Emily Hellmuth, an ace from Riley Patterson and another block from Hellmuth and Meg Brown pushed the team to a 10-point spread at 19-9.  Late in the set, more smashes from Chillingworth and Hellmuth would do the trick and Pepperdine soon came away with a 25-16 set win.

The second set would prove to be more challenging from start to finish with each team working to 10-10, 16-16 and 23-23 tied scores throughout.  After a Pepperdine timeout when the score was knotted at 23's, the Waves came out with a pair of quick kills from Brown and Hendrickson to win the set and pull ahead 2-0.

The third set was similar to the first in that the Waves came out with a vengeance, amassing a 6-2 lead with a block from Hellmuth and Brown, as well as multiple kills from Chillingworth and Polk.  Cal Poly stayed within two points to the 12-10 mark, but more kills from Polk and Brown and an ace from Patterson pushed the squad to a six-point lead 16-10.  A big block from Brown and Hendrickson late in the action kept Pepperdine moving forward and smashes from Polk and Chillingworth put the score at 23-16 and gave the squad a chance to close.  The Waves would do just that, capitalizing on a service error from across the net and a final Chillingworth attack effort to complete the sweep with a 25-17 set win.
